San Francisco Press Club Honoring El Tecolote Newspaper Golden Legacy Anniversary on Saturday, August 26, 2023.
WHEREAS, El Tecolote is an integral part of San Francisco’s Mission District serving the information needs of its residents, particularly Latinos, and
WHEREAS, El Tecolote is a bilingual, biweekly newspaper serving the Mission since 1970, and
WHEREAS, El Tecolote is considered one of the longest-living Latino newspapers in California and the U.S., and
WHEREAS, El Tecolote is an ongoing award-winning local, state and national newspaper, and
WHEREAS, El Tecolote is a continuing training ground for aspiring student journalists, including those from City College’s journalism department, and
WHEREAS, El Tecolote’s founder, Juan Gonzales, is the Department Chair of Journalism at City College of San Francisco, and
WHEREAS, Juan Gonzales has trained student journalists who were award-winners while working at El Tecolote, Mission Local, and San Francisco Standard, and
WHEREAS, El Tecolote and Juan Gonzales have served Mission residents and aspiring student journalists for more than 50 years, and
WHEREAS, Juan Gonzales serves on the Board of the San Francisco Press Club as the organization’s secretary, and
WHEREAS, El Tecolote is an integral part of the neighborhood press,
THEREFORE, be it resolved that I, Curtis Sparrer, as Board President of the San Francisco Press Club, do hereby proclaim August 26, 2023, A Day of Solidarity with the Neighborhood Press.
